According to a Toten Økomusem record of their marriage, 33-year-old Johannes Johannessen Malterud (father of the editor's paternal grand- mother) married 28-year-old Maria Olsdatter in Vestre Toten parish, Oppland county, Norway, on April 7, 1865.
After their marriage the Johannes Johannessen family resided on the
Qvaxrud farm, where Maria Olsdatter gave birth
to two sons, Ole Jakob (September 13, 1865) and
Hans Christian (September 21, 1867). The family departed Norway
for America aboard the Emerald on
April 30, 1868.
